Grian is also known locally as the Ivy Vine Players.  Students were thrilled to get up close and learn the stories behind the characters, see tricks for making the puppets move and view a variety of different forms of puppetry.

Grian is a master of making beautiful art objects from recycling and everyday found objects. One student wrote Grian that she was so inspired, she is now making her own puppets at home.  Students especially enjoyed shadow box puppetry – all made with cut up cereal boxes, chopsticks, crates and desk lamps.  The magic of a story transformed these objects into pure

This year’s Battle of the Books was another success!  The competition took place on the May 15th, 2013 in the library.  Three teams of students competed in the jeopardy-style competition and answered questions about ten different books from this year’s list.  The list was made up of multiple genres (short stories, novels, poetry, and non-fiction) and included award winners such as Wonder, by Patricia Palacia, Trapped: how the World Recued 33 Miners from 2,000 Feet Below the Chilean Desert, by Marc Aronson, and “The Adventure of the Speckled Band,” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Dear OTA members,

Do you wonder how this period of time will be described in history books? This is something I contemplate often.

This is a time of great struggle for public education. It is a time when local authority over educational policy is being replaced by corporations, like Pearson, who have decided that reform must be done through a barrage of high stakes standardized tests. These tests are based upon curriculum that has been deemed best for the nation. Think about that....a national curriculum imposed by a government (corporations) who seem to be more interested in "winning" the Race

Onteora DECA senior, Danielle Barringer, accompanied by OCS DECA Advisor, J. Douglas returned from Ananheim, CA, with heavier luggage. . . . a large trophy!   Danielle competed in the Professional Selling Event at the NY DECA state level in March where she placed 1st.

On April 24, 2013, she took off to compete at the International level with over 16,000 students in attendance.  Danielle earned four medals and the second place trophy.   She was a top finalist in PS written exam, presentation and overall finalist.  She then qualified for the final round where she placed 2nd internationally.

Team Onteora joined 9,000 other walker on October 21st at the Woodbury Commons. District-wide, T-shirt sales raised more than $600, with additional donations totaling $300. As always, thanks for all of the support!
