Throughout the school year, the children in Leigh Ann VanDeBogart’s and Elizabeth Hopper’s classes made holiday themed gifts for clients of the Woodstock Area Meals-on –Wheels program, an organization that delivers hot, nutritious meals to the elderly, shut-ins, handicapped persons, and convalescents. The projects ranged from ghostly lollipops, pinecone turkeys, winter sleighs, New Year poppers, spring inspired baskets to patriotic magnets. The children learned the importance of being good citizens and caring for those who live different lives than their own.
The civics lessons were also combined with English Language Arts as the children wrote “How-to” stories about crafts they created. Polly Langer vice president of the Woodstock Area Meals-on-Wheels program agrees that the children’s efforts are much appreciated. Mrs. Langer said, “Many of our clients are home bound with families that are far away. The gifts are absolutely charming and help brighten the days of our clients.”
