Onteora Teacher Wins Art Award at Nyack Museum

"Blue Pitcher"

A series of three of Hamilton's drawings, part of a nationally juried exhibition on display at the Edward Hopper House Art Center in Nyack, received the show's prestigious Recognition Award.

Hamilton's winning images — of a landscape, a blue pitcher, and a yellow door — were selected for inclusion in the 18th annual "Small Matters of Great Importance" exhibition. Her three works are executed in graphite pencil, color pencil, and transparency. Each consists of three layers, with a grid pattern clearly visible in the background.

"As an artist," Hamilton said, "I find the structure of the grid compelling and powerful. I am attracted to the grid's sense of order, stability, and strength."

Hamilton, who has been teaching at Onteora for nine years, said the award is especially meaningful given her admiration for Hopper's work.

"I'm drawn to Edward Hopper's emphatic use of light and contrast," she said. "He's a very complex painter."

The show runs at the Edward Hopper House Art Center through Nov. 13. For more information, call 358-0744 or go to www.yearofedwardhopper.com/currently-on-view.html.
