Onteora Business Department wins Department of the Year!

Mrs. J. Douglas and Mr. W. Prutzman will be recognized by the New York State Business Teachers Association at their annual meeting to be held in Tarrytown on October 14.  Mr. Jon Greenwalt, NYSED will be presenting the award.

The Onteora Business Department has been active in staying in the forefront of their respective areas.  New classes have been implemented to keep up with the interests and demands of our community.  Mr. Prutzman’s innovative Law Enforcement courses involve guest speakers from the FBI, Ulster County Sheriff’s Department and K9 units.  The students have gone on numerous field trips, which have included the early stages of the new jail, Cooperstown K9 training grounds and the NY State Trooper Academy.  Students have been given the opportunity to shadow employees in this field.  At the end of last year, two female law enforcement students shadowed the UC Sheriff for a day.

The new Career Prep course offers students to earn high school credit for work experience.  Mr. Prutzman’s Diversified OcEd certification enables him to oversee students in numerous work conditions.  The course is mandatory to ensure safety in the workplace.

Mrs. Douglas introduced Business Computer Applications as a bridge course with Ulster Community College.  Students in this class earn college credits from Ulster County Community College.

Recently added to the course electives was Sports/Entertainment Marketing along with Hotel/Restaurant Management.  Students in these courses are given hands on experiences in a booming field. Last year, the Hotel/Restaurant students toured the Emerson and the restaurants on site.  The Sports Marketing students went to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.  Sports students also were given the opportunity to prepare and deliver a “sports desk” announcement.
