Mr. LaFera’s class performed The Big Orange Splot by Daniel Manus Pinkwater. Miss Schiappa’s class performed Elmer by David McKee.
The students in both classes took complete ownership of their respective plays. Ideas for costumes, props, backdrops, and movements were created organically. As the students thought of new and exciting ways to enhance their play, their ideas were listened to and incorporated into the performance. Mrs. Godfrey, Bennett’s wonderfully talented Art teacher, helped us create all of the costumes and props. The students were very appreciative of her efforts.
Both plays contained a theme this year: “Be proud of who you are.” Each book contains this element and it came through in the students’ performances. The students were very proud of themselves. We also had time to celebrate in Bennett’s cafeteria where the students were treated to refreshments donated by the families of both classes.
During the rehearsal process, students learned to work cooperatively. They understood the importance of working as a team to achieve a common goal. Their efforts were admirable, because their performances were flawless!
